Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area

Profile

Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area is a public off-road park in Harlan County, in Kentucky’s Appalachian mountains. It covers about 7,000 acres and has roughly 150 miles of trails, mostly old mining and logging roads. The trails are open to ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes and full-size 4x4s. Its southern trailhead is at Evarts, and a second one is at Putney.

Riders know it for its steep hill climbs, numbered trails rated by difficulty, and big views from up to about 3,300 feet. ATV Illustrated called it “possibly the best ATV riding in North America.” It’s run by the Harlan County Outdoor Recreation Board Authority. Riders need a permit, sold at the trailheads for 31 days or a full year, and the fees pay for trail upkeep.
