Trail Information
Just outside of Ouray, in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, Mineral Creek is well-known gem that beckons off-road enthusiasts with its stunning landscapes and challenging terrain. If you're armed with a capable off-road vehicle and a thirst for adventure, this trail should definitely be on your radar.
Mineral Creek is an access route for both the Alpine Loop and Poughkeepsie Gulch. Driving this trail, you’ll find yourself surrounded by the rugged beauty typical of the San Juan Mountains. Whether it's crossing crystal-clear mountain streams or navigating through fields of wildflowers in the late summer, the scenery is diverse and always spectacular. Don’t forget to keep an eye out for wildlife as it’s not uncommon to spot deer or even elk grazing nearby.
Mineral Creek is a generally difficult trail and isn’t for the faint-hearted. It demands skill and a sturdy 4WD vehicle. The route includes a mix of rocky sections, water crossings, and high shelf roads, and can be completed in a stock high-clearance SUV with careful tire placement.
As with any trail, preparation is key. Make sure your vehicle is in top condition and equipped with necessary recovery gear. Driving with friends or at least informing someone of your travel plans is always a good idea for safety. Remember, the mountains are a pristine natural environment. Stick to marked trails and practice Leave No Trace principles to help keep it that way.
After a day on the trail, the nearby mining town of Ouray, affectionately known as the "Switzerland of America," offers plenty of ways to unwind. From soothing hot springs to charming bistros, it’s the perfect place to chill after your rugged adventure. Make sure to visit and support the local stores and restaurants while you're there.
