Trail Information
The Florida Adventure Trail (F.A.T), created by Sunshine State Adventure Co., is an adventurous 1,200-mile overland and adventure bike route, uniquely showcasing the diverse landscapes of Florida. This trail is a blend of approximately 60% unpaved roads and scenic paved connections, meticulously designed to offer an immersive outdoor experience. It features numerous waypoints, including campsites, gas stations, food stops, and points of interest, ensuring both convenience and exploration for the adventurers.
The creation and maintenance of the F.A.T reflect a strong commitment to community and environmental stewardship. Sunshine State Adventure Co. demonstrates this commitment by allocating a portion of their proceeds from the sale of F.A.T GPX files to the Wounded Warrior Project and to support trail maintenance efforts through their F.A.T Friends group. This initiative not only supports veterans but also emphasizes the importance of preserving natural trails.
For navigational ease, the trail is marked with clear indications, especially in difficult sections, and riders are advised to be cautious, particularly considering the seasonal water levels in Florida. Completing the trail is typically a 5-6 day endeavor. The company also facilitates a community through its F.A.T Friends group on Facebook, where individuals can engage, share information, and participate in trail upkeep activities. This trail is more than just a route - it's a community-driven project that balances the thrill of adventure with social responsibility and environmental care.
Jon Birkmire does a fantastic job of explaining the history and motivation for the trail in the video below:
