Trail Information
Tincup Pass is a well-known mountain pass located n central Colorado, within the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. It's located in Gunnison County, near the small mountain towns of Tincup and St. Elmo, reaching an elevation of approximately 12,154 feet above sea level.
Features
The trail begins in St. Elmo, CO. St. Elmo is one of Colorado's most famous and visited ghost towns, offering a fascinating glimpse into the state's mining history and a unique atmosphere that attracts tourists and history enthusiasts. It was established in the late 1870s during the Colorado mining boom and quickly became a bustling community centered around gold and silver mining. At its peak, the town had a population of several hundred people, along with businesses, hotels, saloons, a school, and other essential structures.
As the mining industry began to decline in the late 19th century, so did the population. By the early 20th century the town's economic vitality faded. The last mine in the area closed in the 1920s, leading to the eventual abandonment of the town.
St. Elmo's well-preserved buildings and structures have made it a popular destination, and have resulted in it becoming a National Historic District to ensure its preservation.
Difficulty
Tincup Pass is considered a moderately difficult off-road route, suitable for experienced drivers with proper off-road vehicles. The difficulty of the pass can vary based on factors such as weather conditions, the type of vehicle you're driving, and your own off-roading skills.
The exception to this rating is an option section of the trail known as "Old Tincup". This section of the trail is difficult and will require a modified, high-clearance vehicle to successfully navigate.
