Trail Information
If you're looking for an unforgettable adventure, the Slick Rock Road (F.R. 7N17) near Lake Alpine, California, is an absolute must-visit destination. This rugged dirt road winds through the Sierra Nevada mountains, offering spectacular views, challenging terrain, and plenty of opportunities for exploration.
Located in the Stanislaus National Forest, Slick Rock Road stretches for approximately 8 miles and can be accessed from several points, including Highway 4 and the nearby town of Bear Valley. The road is open to all street-legal vehicles, but a high-clearance 4x4 is recommended with at least 33" tires, a locker, body armor/sliders, and possibly a winch. There are no bypasses for the difficult sections.
The road climbs up to 7500 feet, providing stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape including the beautiful Utica Reservoir. As you make your way along the road, you will encounter numerous obstacles, including rocky outcroppings, steep climbs, and tight switchbacks. The challenges of Slick Rock Road require careful navigation, skillful driving, and a solid vehicle, but the rewards are well worth the effort.
Slick Road offers quite a few camping sights along the way. These areas offer opportunities for hiking, fishing, and other outdoor activities so be sure to bring your gear.
