Trail Information
Peters Mill Run, situated in the George Washington National Forest, is a roughly 8.5 mile, point-to-point trail that is well suited for those looking to off-road in Northern Virginia.
Mill Run can be accessed from either its north or south end. The southernmost two miles present the most challenging section, and offer a taste of adventure while still being manageable for most vehicles. The trail's northern end is near the Woodstock Tower, which is a fun landmark worth the short hike to visit.
For those looking to camp, Little Fort Campground is conveniently located along the trail. It offers 11 tent sites, available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis, perfect for those seeking an overnight outdoor experience.
Peters Mill Run forms part of the Lee Ranger District's OHV trail system. While the system contains 36 miles of trails, it's important to note that Peters Mill Run is the only trail open to licensed 4-wheel drive vehicles. The other trails are exclusive to ATV use.
A permit is required to access Peters Mill Run, priced at an affordable $5.00 for a day. These permits can be easily obtained at various local gas stations and stores. For more detailed information, including permit locations, please check out the USFS website.
The trail is typically open from mid-March until the third Monday in January, weather and trail conditions permitting. To check current conditions or for more information, contacting the Lee Ranger District at 540-984-4101 is recommended.
