Trail Information
The Mojave Road is a historic overland trail that stretches for over 140 miles through the Mojave Desert in California. The road follows a route that was originally used by Native Americans, and later by Spanish explorers, early pioneers, and the U.S. Army. Today, the Mojave Road is a popular destination for off-road enthusiasts and adventurers who want to explore the rugged and remote wilderness of the Mojave Desert.
The Mojave Road starts near the Colorado River and runs northwest toward the town of Barstow. Along the way, it passes through a number of historic sites and landmarks, including old mining camps, and military outposts as it traverses the Mojave National Preserve.
However, the scenery along the Mojave Road is breathtaking, with stunning vistas of the desert landscape, and unique geological formations like lava flows, sand dunes, and volcanic cinder cones. That said, this road is unpaved and can be quite challenging, with sandy washes, rocky terrain, and steep grades. It is recommended that only high-clearance, well-maintained, well-equipped & provisioned, 4-wheel drive vehicles attempt the journey.
Many travelers choose to camp along the Mojave Road, taking advantage of the remote and scenic campsites that are scattered along the route. As with any route - especially one on a national preserve - it’s important to follow tread lightly principles to ensure the land is protected and preserved for future travelers.
Before you set out, don’t forget to pack a unique rock of your own to add to the Travelers Monument when you arrive. It’s an age-old tradition in honor of the road and the long line of travelers who have taken it. It will be something you won’t forget soon.
