Tucked away in Moab, Utah, the Mashed Potatoes trail was always a bit of a legend, especially during the Easter Jeep Safari. It was that perfect mix of challenge and beauty, a real highlight for anyone looking to test their mettle against the wild Utah landscape. But then, come October 2023, everything changed. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) decided it was time to close it down as part of a bigger plan they had going, the Labyrinth Rims Gemini Bridges Travel Management Plan. This wasn’t just about shutting a gate on a trail; it felt like a whole vibe was being dimmed. For those of us who’ve made the Easter Jeep Safari a sort of pilgrimage, losing Mashed Potatoes trail was like losing a part of the adventure itself. It’s more than just a path that’s gone; it’s a piece of the conversation with the wild that we’re not ready to stop having.
In response to this closure, we have joined forces with the Blue Ribbon Coalition (BRC), a leading organization committed to preserving responsible recreational access to public lands and waters. The BRC is at the forefront of the battle to reopen Mashed Potatoes, advocating for a balanced approach that ensures environmental protection while maintaining the public's right to access.
Our partnership with the BRC is built on a shared vision of free and equal use of public lands. By collaborating, we aim to amplify our voice and resources to support the cause effectively. This alliance is not just about one trail or one decision; it's about standing up for the principle that public lands should remain accessible for all to enjoy, respect, and cherish.
To support the BRC's efforts and raise awareness of the situation, we are introducing a series of badges. These badges are more than just symbols; they are a call to action. They serve as a reminder of the beauty and freedom that public lands offer and the ongoing struggle to protect these values. By purchasing a badge, you are contributing to the BRC's legal and advocacy efforts to restore access to Mashed Potatoes and ensure that similar closures are approached with careful consideration of public input and access rights.
We're committed to navigating the challenges ahead, advocating for policies that balance conservation and recreational access, and ensuring that the wonders of places like Hey Joe Canyon remain open for all to experience. In this critical moment, your support can make a difference. Join us in this cause, and let's work together to keep America's public lands open, accessible, and enjoyed by all.
