Trail Information
Nestled in the wild heart of Alaska near Willow, Craigie Creek offers an inviting path for both hikers and off-road enthusiasts. This unique trail, once an old mining road, unfolds over a 9-mile round trip, guiding adventurers through a landscape rich in history and natural beauty.
Accessible from the Palmer/Wasilla side via a rough, unpaved road that winds over Hatcher Pass, the journey to Craigie Creek is as captivating as the destination itself. The trail takes explorers through areas that were once bustling with Alaska's mining activities, leading to the breathtaking Dogsled Pass and the serene Schroff Lake.
The initial 4.2 miles of Craigie Creek, shared with ATVs and other off-road vehicles, follow the old mining road and provide straightforward navigation. Beyond this, a footpath extends for an additional 0.3 miles. This section involves some mild boulder-hopping and leads hikers to the Pass, revealing stunning views of the surrounding wilderness.
Ideal for visits from June to October, Craigie Creek is a haven for those seeking to immerse themselves in Alaska's diverse wildlife and scenic landscapes. While hikers are advised against drinking water directly from the creek due to contamination from mining residues, Schroff Lake offers a safer water source for those carrying water filters.
Craigie Creek is more than just an old mining path; it's a journey through time and nature. It offers a unique opportunity to experience the heart of Alaska's wild and historic charm, making it a must-visit for anyone looking for a day of authentic Alaskan adventure.
